Your first appointment

What happens during a physiotherapy assessment?

The aim is to understand your symptoms, how they affect your life and what you want to return to. The exact assessment and plan depend on your presentation.

We listen

Your clinician asks about your symptoms, medical history, day-to-day demands and goals.

We assess

Relevant movement, strength, balance or functional tasks may be checked with your consent.

We explain

You receive a clear working explanation, including uncertainty and referral options where relevant.

We plan

Together you agree suitable next steps, which may include education, exercise, manual therapy or onward referral.

Assessment does not guarantee that physiotherapy or a particular treatment will be appropriate. We will discuss alternatives or referral if the findings suggest another route.

Care built around function

More than short-term symptom relief

Physiotherapy can combine education, progressive exercise, movement practice and hands-on treatment when appropriate. The balance should reflect your assessment, preferences and goals.

  • Understand the problem: a plain-English explanation and advice on what you can safely keep doing.
  • Build capacity: progressive rehabilitation for strength, mobility, balance or task tolerance.
  • Measure progress: repeat relevant tests and adjust the plan rather than relying on guesswork.
  • Return to what matters: prepare for work, family life, exercise or sport at a suitable pace.

Is physiotherapy the right starting point?

Common reasons people book

We provide musculoskeletal physiotherapy for adults. Suitability is decided through assessment, and some symptoms need medical review or another specialist instead.

Back and neck problems

New or persistent pain, stiffness, referred symptoms or difficulty returning to normal activity.

Joint pain and arthritis

Support with movement, strength, activity and self-management based on your presentation.

Sports and exercise injuries

Assessment and staged rehabilitation for sprains, strains and return-to-sport goals.

Muscle and tendon problems

Load management and progressive rehabilitation for symptoms affecting daily life or training.

After surgery

Rehabilitation that follows your surgeon’s guidance, healing stage and functional goals.

Reduced movement or confidence

A structured route back towards walking, work, gym activity or the tasks you value.

Choose the safest route

Evidence and professional standards

Check the information behind your care

These independent sources explain physiotherapy, professional registration and evidence-based management. They are provided to support informed decisions, not as a promise of a particular result.

When not to wait for a physiotherapy appointment

If back pain is accompanied by new loss of feeling around the genitals or anus, changes in bladder or bowel control, or pain/tingling/weakness in both legs, the NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E. For severe pain that starts suddenly or is worsening quickly, use NHS 111 or seek an urgent GP appointment. Read the NHS back-pain warning signs. For any medical emergency, call 999.

Questions before booking

Physiotherapy FAQs

Do I need a GP referral for private physiotherapy?

No. You can self-refer and book directly. If you plan to claim through private medical insurance, check your policy and authorisation requirements before booking.

Which appointment should a new patient choose?

Choose “Physiotherapy – Initial Consultation” for the standard 60-minute, £65 assessment. Choose “Initial Consultation with Johnny Wilson” for the 60-minute, £150 appointment with Johnny.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows the relevant area to be assessed and lets you move safely. Shorts or a vest may help for some assessments, but your consent and comfort come first.

Will I receive treatment at the first appointment?

The first priority is assessment and explanation. Your clinician may begin advice, exercise or treatment if appropriate and agreed, but this depends on the findings and time available.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no reliable one-size-fits-all number. Your clinician will discuss options after assessment and review progress with you. You are not required to commit to a package.

What if I am unsure whether physiotherapy is suitable?

Call 0115 686 0288 before booking. If your symptoms sound urgent or outside our scope, you may be advised to contact your GP, NHS 111 or emergency services instead.
